Kussi Weiss Quintet:
The Quintet’s elegant arrangements not only add sizzle to the classical Gypsy swing repertoire, but also rejuvenate non-Gypsy songs. They have all played together since childhood and it shows! Sadly Kussi’s regular bass player, Dietmar Osterburg, could not attend and David Miles stood in.
Tcha Limberger Trio: This remarkable trio delivers a powerful melange of traditional Gypsy music with instrumentals and haunting vocals. Their songs of love, loss, longing and other triumphs and disasters of the heart cast a spell that, once heard, can never be forgotten. Tcha’s songs, sung in Romanes, are difficult to translate and as Tcha himself explained, the essence of the Gypsy songs that he performs is not really in their meaning or lyrics, but in the way they make the singer sing. Sadly Tcha’s father, Vivi Limberger could not make the festival due to ill health (Dave Kelbie stood in at the last minute and did a sterling job). We all missed Vivi and wish him well and hope to see him here soon.
SPONSORS/SUPPORTERS: Many thanks to all the contributors and supporters who recognised the cultural value of the festival and helped to make it happen, many assisting their countrymen to attend the festival. This commemorative CD pack was only made possible by Jeremy O’Sullivan of the European Commission Representation in the UK who supported and contributed to the production of the CDs and recognised the festival’s contribution to promoting the culture of the Romani people, Europe’s oldest minority and still one of its most marginalised. Without their help these CDs would not exist. Thanks also to workshop venue providers: The Royal Dance Academy (Battersea), Institute Francaise (London), Thomas School (Battersea) and Jazz Cafe Posk (Hammersmith). We are unable to name all the people here who helped in so many ways but we thank them all, they are all remembered and highly valued. Brian Potts (USA), Mark & Rose Wojcik (UK) & Martin Christie - Music Garden (UK) all loyal fans and supporters of the festival and Gypsy Swing.
THANK YOU to all the heroes who played their part and made this happen: The festival and these recordings are offered as a labour of love to Gypsy music and Gypsy musicians. We are honoured to have this opportunity of bringing their music to the attention of the wider public, and in so doing make a small contribution to ensure that their community and its culture are given the recognition they deserve. We are grateful to them all for sharing their music with us, and for all the good times. Opre Romale! Respect and thanks to the thirty-four musicians who accepted our invitation and gathered here from across Europe and allowed their music to be recorded. They truly made the festival the success it deserved; without them there would not have been one. Gratitude and heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this dream happen and worked so hard to make Django Reinhardt’s 100th birthday festival and commemorative CDs a reality - you all have a place in our hearts.
